Two Matchbox 1-75 series No.52a (1st issue) Maserati 4CLTs; production 1958-1965. Came as a pair for less than £5. Both colours are factory original but the red one has been touched in, in parts and the decals messed with. The yellow one came without decals or driver but replacements have been obtained. Original plan was to only keep one but the yellow one has wire wheels and the red one was more or less complete. So, after refurbishment ended up keeping both. Approximately 1:60 scale.
Think I probably have more models of Aston Martins than any other marque.
These two are both Matchbox 1-75 series. The DB2/4 is No. 53a (first issue) produced from 1958 to 1963.
The F1 car is a DBR5, No. 19c, produced from 1961 to 1965. The original appeared in only one event when two cars were entered in the 1960 British Grand Prix: Roy Salvadori retired and Maurice Trintignant finished 11th. The failure of the R5 meant that Aston withdrew from Formula One and have made no entries since.
A couple of bits of 3-rail track and another pair of buffers, another TPO coach and a Corgi bus. Not too terrible a haul and not much money.
In the meantime, the collection of first issue matchbox toys continues with No. 6a Quarry Truck (production 1956-1958), scale probably 1:100 or smaller. This one came with a repro box but was very reasonably priced. Box could be better though.

In the film, everyone remembers the Minis, the coach and possibly the Miura, but the gang’s escape, disguised as football fans, was in a battered Ford Thames minibus.
So, jolly good excuse to add one more to my collection of Matchbox 1-75 series first issues. “Thames Estate”, production 1959-66; one of the last to be added to the first run of models.
Thames was Ford’s branding for commercial vehicles in the 1950s and ’60s. This model was their last light-van before the introduction of the Transit.
Over the past few months I have been collecting examples of the first issue of each No. in the Matchbox 1-75 series of models. When Lesney decided upon a new model one of the existing ones would be dropped and the No. allocated to the new toy with a b (or later c, d, etc.) suffix.
I already had several examples of the first issue (some of them from new!) Not really worried about the condition (playworn ‘patina’ is good) but the cleaner the better really.
This one is a No. 3a (produced from 1953-61). It was missing the wheel handle but white-metal replacement parts are available!
This is a No 44a Rolls Royce Silver Cloud I; about 1/80th scale and produced from 1958-64.
This though is a No. 64b MG 1100 (produced 1966-70) about 1/60th scale. Quite an unusual model and with working suspension, a driver and a small dog poking its head out of the window.
Missed a toyfair visit again earlier in the year due to being unwell. So with a bit of an effort, I made the most recent one. It was not well attended by either buyers or sellers and there was no opportunity to add to my Hornby 3-rail items.
So, a Matchbox 1-75 series ERF Horsebox (1957-64) and although it looks the same size (if not scale) what is actually a Matchbox Yesteryears series (first issue) Sentinel Steam Wagon…of about the same vintage. Outlay of ‘virtually no money at all’. Pleasing overall.
Missed two visits to the toyfair (bit poorly) but managed to get to it on July 1st; possibly the warmest day I can remember. Still quite well attended by both sellers and buyers.
So a Hornby 0-6-0 Great Western pannier tank and a Ford 105E van for not much money. The loco needed a bit of TLC and a new copper ring for the top of the chimney. The Anglia van is I think supposed to be in British Relay livery but the graphics are very poor. Might have expected better from Oxford Die-casts. Also needed some fettling as the baseplate was loose.
The next visit was towards the end of August. Much cooler, thankfully and reasonably well-attended.
Which yielded a couple of bargain bin items and a quite nice (Corgi) BET single-deck bus in Oxford livery, for no money at all.
The ‘random’ bag of bits,
was once a Matchbox “Models of Yesteryear” series, Model T BP petrol tanker.
…it is again.
Lastly in October…chillier and really quite Autumnal…
Harrington Grenadier by EFE in (local firm) Timpson’s livery. Common sight on the roads to the West Country ‘back in the day’. Plus a 1950s Karrier Bantam dustcart by Matchbox in very poor condition but a ‘fun’ buy. Lastly a 1960s Dinky Toys Jaaaaag Mk X. Nice original, slightly playworn, condition and a steal at just £1. Needed tyres….not a problem. Poorly attended but was different in that a researcher for a publishing company was interested in talking to people about possible toy-related magazine ideas. It is unusual to see a lady at these, pretty much, male-oriented events. 😛
