Alas poor Robin. (Or; who killed…?)

Until today I have been enjoying watching the activities of a pair of Robins, which had nested in a Leylandii quite close to my first floor windows. The parent birds could be seen sitting in an adjacent fir tree, possibly looking for predatory larger birds, before swooping rapidly into the Leylandii emerging a few seconds later, equally quickly and darting off presumably in search of food.

Today I noticed two Magpies perched on the Lelandii, very close to where the nest must be.  Since when there has been no activity around the nest site and no sign of the parent birds whatsoever. It seems likely that these unpleasant bird thugs have attacked the nest and destroyed the eggs and possibly killed the parent birds too. Magpies will happily eat smaller birds and I have seen a lone bird attack  a Heron which sometimes visits.
